Formentera decries attacks in Paris

Minut silenci premsaPresident of the Formentera Council, Jaume Ferrer, speaking for the entire administration, gave a strongly-worded condemnation of the attacks that occurred last night in Paris and offered his condolences to the victims and their families. He declared he hoped for a speedy recovery for all the injured.

The president, a handful of department heads of the Council, different political representatives and residents of the island took part in a minute of silence today at noon in the plaça de la Constitució as an expression of Formentera's support for and solidarity with the people of France.

Council launches call for submissions in sports photography competition

poliesportiu4The Formentera Council's office of sport has opened a call for submissions for the first island-wide contest of sports photography, el I Concurs de Fotografia Esportiva. Photographers are invited to submit their efforts through 23 November to the Citizens' Information Office (OAC) or by certified post. Department head Jordi Vidal described the aim of the contest as «to cast a fresh look on sport and use photographic expression as a driving force to promote its practise». Each photographer is allowed to submit a maximum of three prints, explained Vidal, which may depict sport in any of its forms.

Format and size
Submissions must not have been previously published nor submitted for review in any other competition. Prints can be in colour or black and white but unmounted, and should measure 20 cm wide (minimum) and 40 cm long (maximum). Acceptable formats include: square, digital, classic and panorama. Modifications to digital submissions must be limited to tone, saturation, brightness, contrast, levels and curves.

Photos must be submitted to the OAC or in a plain white envelope by certified mail. Within that envelope, another plain white envelope should be included, noting the photographer's full name, physical address, email address and a telephone number where she/he can be reached. On the back of each photograph, applicants must include a title and the date and site the shot was taken.

600 euros in prizes
Councillor Vidal declared the announcement of winners and delivery of prizes would take place December 3rd 2015, thus dovetailing with the local Sant Francesc Xavier celebrations at the Antoni Blanc sports centre. The Council will use the opportunity to exhibit a selection of submissions in the sports centre. In Vidal's words, the basic criteria for winning submissions will be «successfully capturing the moment of action (athlete's technical motion, movement, flexibility); the quality of the photo as a sports artefact; photographic technique; and the ability of the photo to effectively transmit values important in sport». Three prizes will be awarded: of 300, 200 and 100 euros.

This Sunday Dàmaris Gelabert brings family-friendly music to Formentera audiences

Damaris Gelabert foto premsaOn Sunday, 8 November, pedagogue, music therapist, singer and songwriter Dàmaris Gelabert will take the stage for a 5:30-p.m. show in the Sant Francesc cinema (la sala de Cultura). For Gelabert, nothing beats music as a way to reach young audiences. Her website, Tot Sona, has this to say about the talented singer's take on things: «Not only do songs educate, they allow emotional bonds to form». Cultural councillor Susana Labrador noted her department's eagerness to support more family-oriented acts such as this one, «so that culture becomes important early on for Formentera kids».

At Sunday's concert Gelabert will perform some of her best-known numbers. Tickets are 8 euros for adults (16 and up) and 6 euros for children (1 to 16). They can be purchased online at http://www.damarisgelabert.com/venda-entrades/ or thirty minutes before showtime at the box office. A number of Gelabert's CDs will also be on sale at the event on Sunday.

Ligeros de equipaje. Crónica de la retirada, this Saturday in Sant Francesc

ligeros de equipaje3This Saturday, 7 November in Formentera, Viridiana productions will bring to the stage Ligeros de equipaje. Crónica de la retirada, a theatrical production written and directed by Jesús Arbués with acting by Javier García and Pedro Rebollo.

Storyline
A work of fiction based on numerous true chronicles and testimonial recounting, Ligeros purports to shed light on the stories of an almost-forgotten many... Rather than a piece on the Spanish civil war, it is a production on what winds up in the scrap heap of memory, on absence and all that is left in the past, on death and life. It is about man, capable of the best and the worst.

Saturday nine p.m.
The production, which benefits from the support of the Ministry of Culture's PLATEA programme, will be given next Saturday evening at nine in the municipal cultural hall (cinema) of Sant Francesc. Tickets are 12 euros. In 2014 in the city of Rodrigo, the show received the Castilla-León theatre's award for best small-house production.
